Kashipur is one of the important places in the district of Udham Singh Nagar in Uttaranchal.
During Harsha’s reign (606-647 AD) when Yuan Chwang visited the region, Kashipur was known as Govisham. One can even today spot the remains of the old city in this place.
Today, Kashipur is named after Kashinath Adhikari, one if the officers of the Chand dynasty and the founder of this place. Punjabi, Hindi and English are widely spoken in Kashipur.
Uttarakhand is a place for most of the gods and Kashinath has several temples dedicated to various different Gods.
Bheem Shankar Mahadev is dedicated to Lord Shiva while Gurudwara Sri Nanaka Sahib is one of the holy places for the Sikhs.
Maa Mansha Devi Mandir at Lahoriyan, Kashipur is dedicated to Maa Mansha Devi and Teerth Drona Sagar is connected with he legendary teacher Guru Dronacharya of Mahabharata.
According Skan Puran, the water here is as holy and sacred as the Ganga.
It was considered a very sacred spot after Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. This place is occupied partially by a pond which is in turn surrounded by temples of several deities. At one point of time there were as many as 32 temples surrounding the pond. This place was visited by Swami Dayanand, the founder of Arya Samaj who even stayed there for some time. Chaiti mela is a great fair that takes place in Kashipur.
Kashipur today is famous because of its industries which have also led to the development of the region. Some of the main industrial estates here are Balaji Industrial Estate, Bheem Nagar Industrial Estate, Omega Industrial Estate and IDEB Industrial Estate. Among major tourist attractions are ruins of Harsha period evident from the Govisham fort, Tumaria dam where you have migratory birds flocking to the place and of course the temples of Kashipur.
